How the ZIP code lookup works

  1. You type a 5-digit ZIP code.
  2. Your browser downloads a small file of ZIP code areas (Census 2020 ZCTA-county relationship file).
  3. It shows the county, or every county the ZIP code touches with its share of land.

Nothing you type is sent to us: the file is the same for everyone and the match happens on your device.

Why a ZIP code can be in more than one county

ZIP codes are mail routes, drawn without regard to county lines. Of the 33,050 ZIP code areas with residents, 9,721 (29%) cross at least one county line. For those, use your location or your street address to get the exact county. More in ZIP code vs ZCTA.

  • Forms and benefits: many state forms ask for your county of residence.
